Private Archie William Newell joined the U.S. Marine Corps from Minnesota and served with Company C, 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. He was killed in action on November 20, 1943, during the assault on Tarawa Atoll, and records indicated that he was buried in a memorial cemetery on Betio Island, but his remains could not be identified after the war. In 1949, all unidentified remains from Betio were interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
