Parents: Thresid M. S. Newell
Service era: World War II
Date of death: Saturday, November 20, 1943
Death details: On June 6, 2017, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Private Archie William Newell, missing from World War II. Private Archie William Newell joined the U.S. Marine Corps from Minnesota and served with Company C, 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. He was killed in action on November 20, 1943, during the assault on Tarawa Atoll, and records indicated that he was buried in a memorial cemetery on Betio Island, but his remains could not be identified after the war. In 1949, all unidentified remains from Betio were interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. However, DPAA recently used modern forensic techniques to re-examine the Betio remains, and successfully identified the remains of Private Newell.
