Redick and Marcus Wingate got into an argument around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 31, 2011, at the Langley Square Apartments, on Doolittle Road, off North King Street. The two men went outside and into a courtyard off the apartments, where Wingate displayed a firearm and shot Redick in the upper torso, police said.

Police were searching for him because they believed he killed his ex-wife, her boyfriend and the boyfriend’s young son. Following several tours of combat duty, he recently had returned to Virginia.
