William Michael Meyer from Taylor, Michigan, Wayne county.
Service era: Vietnam
Date of death: April 26, 1967
Death details: On October 24, 1985, the Central Identification Lab-Hawaii (CILHI, now DPAA) identified the remains of Lieutenant Colonel William Michael Meyer, missing from the Vietnam War.
Lieutenant Colonel Meyer, who joined the U.S. Air Force from Pennsylvania, served with the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On April 26, 1967, he piloted an F-105D Thunderchief (serial number 58-1153) on a strike mission targeting an enemy supply bridge at Yen Vien, North Vietnam. During the mission, the Thunderchief was shot down and Lt Col Meyer was killed in the incident. Hostile presence in the area precluded search efforts for his remains at that time. In 1985, the Vietnamese government repatriated human remains to the U.S. which were later identified as those of Lt Col Meyer.
