Death details: On March 2, 1969, eleven members of a U.S. Army reconnaissance team embarked on a combat mission in Cambodia. They departed the landing zone and approached their objective, but enemy forces ambushed them. One Soldier was wounded, and the team retreated to elevated ground in the vicinity of grid coordinates 48P XT 415 935, where they formed a defensive perimeter. As the enemy continued to close in, the team called in a friendly gunship to provide air support. As soon as the gunship departed, the enemy attacked again. An enemy rocket exploded directly over their position, wounding eight of the team members, two fatally. The team members then left the area, but were unable to evacuate the two dead Soldiers, whose bodies were still in their fighting positions when it was overrun by the enemy.
Specialist Five Michael Frederick May, who joined the U.S. Army from Michigan, served with the 5th Special Forces Group. He was one of the team members killed in the ambush, and his remains were not recovered. Today, Specialist Five May is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Death details: During the last week of October 1950, Republic of Korea (ROK) Army forces under the control of the U.S. Eighth Army were advancing deep in North Korean territory, approaching the Yalu River on the Chinese-Korean border. Chinese Communist Forces (CCF) struck back in a surprise attack, engaging the ROK 1st and 6th Divisions near Unsan, some sixty miles north of Pyongyang. The U.S. 1st Cavalry Division, with the 8th Cavalry Regiment in the lead, was rushed forward to reinforce the ROK units in the Unsan area. On November 1, the regiment’s 1st Battalion took up positions north of Unsan, while the 2nd Battalion moved to guard the Nammyon River valley west of town, and the 3rd Battalion was placed in reserve at the valley’s southern end. Private First Class Robert Wayne Hobson joined the U.S. Army from Michigan and served with Headquarters Company of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On November 2, 1950, Headquarters Company was with the Battalion Command Post element near Unsan when the unit came under heavy CCF attacks and received orders to withdraw. During the withdrawal, American units became trapped and took cover inside foxholes or behind bunkers. Private First Class Hobson went missing during the action and could not be located following the incident, though specific details surrounding his loss are unknown. He was never reported as a prisoner of war and was not identified among the remains returned to U.S. custody after the ceasefire. Today, Private First Class Hobson is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
