Honeycutt, Dallas
Army Private

Dallas Honeycutt, age 22, from Tennessee, Washington county.

Service era: Korea

Date of death: Monday, July 6, 1953
Death details: On July 6, 1953, a large Chinese Communist Forces (CCF) unit attacked and overran the U.S. Army outposts on Pork Chop Hill in an attempt to seize whatever territory possible before the impending armistice agreement. After fighting for the position for four days, on July 10, the 7th Infantry Division Commander determined that the CCF disregard for casualties and desire to hold the outpost outweighed the position’s tactical value, and ordered a withdrawal that was eventually completed on July 11. The U.S. never again controlled Pork Chop Hill, preventing thorough recovery efforts for those who were killed or went missing during the fighting. Private First Class Dallas Honeycutt entered the U.S. Army from Tennessee and was a member of Company A of the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He went missing in action during the fighting at Pork Chop Hill on July 6, 1950, though the exact circumstances surrounding his loss are unknown. His remains were not recovered, and he is still unaccounted for. Today, Private First Class Honeycutt is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Roberts, Rayger Glenn
Army Corporal

Rayger Glenn Roberts, age 31, from Tennessee, Washington county.

Service era: Korea

Date of death: Thursday, November 2, 1950
Death details: During the last week of October 1950, Republic of Korea (ROK) Army forces under the control of the U.S. Eighth Army were advancing deep in North Korean territory, approaching the Yalu River on the Chinese-Korean border. Chinese Communist Forces (CCF) struck back in a surprise attack, engaging the ROK 1st and 6th Divisions near Unsan, some sixty miles north of Pyongyang. The U.S. 1st Cavalry Division, with the 8th Cavalry Regiment in the lead, was rushed forward to reinforce the ROK units in the Unsan area. On November 1, the regiment’s 1st Battalion took up positions north of Unsan, while the 2nd Battalion moved to guard the Nammyon River valley west of town, and the 3rd Battalion was placed in reserve at the valley’s southern end. Sergeant Rayer Glenn Roberts, who joined the U.S. Army from Tennessee, was a member of Company M, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. By midnight on November 1, 1950, the 8th Cavalry Regiment was forced to withdraw from the Unsan area to avoid encirclement by the enemy. The 3rd Battalion was the last to withdraw, and was surrounded and cut off by the CCF. They formed a defensive perimeter, and withstood attacks for the next few days before survivors either broke out to avoid capture or surrendered. Sergeant Roberts went missing in action during this battle. One survivor after the battle reported Sergeant Roberts was killed inside the 3rd Battalion perimeter, and he remains unaccounted for. Today, Sergeant Roberts is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
