Raymond Sinowitz, age 25, from New York, Bronx county.
Service era: World War II
Date of death: Saturday, September 26, 1942
Death details: On August 18, 2017, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Private First Class Raymond Sinowitz, missing from World War II. Private First Class Sinowitz entered the U.S. Army Air Forces from New York and served in the 454th Ordnance Company, 27th Bombardment Group. He was captured following the American surrender on Corregidor Island in May of 1942 and eventually interned at the Cabanatuan POW camp. PFC Sinowitz reportedly died on or about September 26, 1942, and was buried at the Cabanatuan camp cemetery. Following the war, the American Graves Registration Service recovered many sets of remains from the Cabanatuan cemetery and brought them to Manila. PFC Sinowitz could not be individually identified at the time, and his remains were reburied as unknowns in the Manila American Cemetery. In 2016, several sets of remains associated with the Cabanatuan camp cemetery were exhumed and sent to DPAA for identification. Scientists from DPAA and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used DNA analysis and modern forensic tools to identify PFC Sinowitz from among these remains.
