Death details: On February 2, 2016, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Master Sergeant Richard Davis, missing from the Korean War. MSG Davis joined the U.S. Army from Pennsylvania and was a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was taken as a prisoner of war when Chinese Communist Forces (CCF) attacked and overwhelmed his unit’s position near Unsan, North Korea. As a prisoner of war, MSG Davis was taken to a holding camp known as Camp 5 where he died in early 1951. His remains were not returned immediately following the conflict’s ceasefire. In 1993, the North Korean government repatriated a set of remains that were reportedly recovered from an area associated with POW Camp 5. Advances in forensic techniques were eventually able to individually identify MSG Davis from among these remains.
