Death details: Commander Doyle Wilmer Lynn, who joined the U.S. Navy from Pennsylvania, was a member of Fighter Squadron 111, stationed aboard the USS Midway (CVA 41). On May 27, 1965, he piloted a single-seat F-8D Crusader (bureau number 148706) as the flight leader on a two-plane anti-aircraft suppression mission against railroad yards in Vinh City, Nghe Province, North Vietnam. As he passed over the target area, his Crusader was struck by anti-aircraft fire, and his plane crashed in the railroad complex. The other pilot on the mission reported seeing no parachute emerge from the stricken aircraft before it hit the ground, and CDR Lynn was not seen again. Attempts to locate or identify him or his remains following the incident were unsuccessful. Today, Commander Lynn is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed along with all his fallen comrades on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.
