Death details: On June 9, 2006, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC, now DPAA) identified the remains of Major John Francis Conlon III, missing from the Vietnam War. Major Conlon entered the U.S. Air Force from Pennsylvania and served with the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron. On March 4, 1966, he was the observer on an O-1E Bird Dog (serial number 54-2499) on a visual reconnaissance mission over South Vietnam. The aircraft went down during the mission for unknown reasons and Maj Conlon was killed. Search teams were not able to locate the crash site or his remains at the time.
